This weekend marked the official 3-month anniversary of the 2010 Shanghai EXPO gala event since its opening on May 1.
With overwhelming crowds of 400,000 to 500,000 visitors per day, the sheer number of people in attendance is a testament to the popularity of the Shanghai World Expo in China. It’s no surprise that the most often talked about (and complained about) experience of the expo are the queues. Every morning, a crowd gathers to wait to enter the Expo site. One inside, each pavilion has its own queue where 4 to 6 hours of wait is normal to get into the popular pavilions.
Visitors, especially those well-informed ones, equipped themselves with small folding chairs and wait hours ahead of the opening hours in the mid summer day.
This video on Tudou.com captures how visitors pour into the Expo site as soon as the gate opens everyday at 9 am sharp. Almost a daily scene, plan-ahead visitors begin their “100-meter”final run towards the most popular of all pavilions such as Saudi Arabia, Japan and Germany. Men and women of all ages take part in the race as running for a few minutes may save up to several hours of queuing time if you are among the first ones getting there.
There are 3 more months to go before Shanghai EXPO closes at end October. If you’re looking to experience this morning tradition, just head over there really early in the mornings, pick your first pavilion and get ready to sprint over like the rest of them once the gates open at 9am!
