The All Purpose Chinese Military Shovel

Talking about top armistice. The featured military shovel turns out to be much more than a beach companion. Apart from digging and craving it also saws and ploughs, wait until you see it axing down a tree. This demo from Tudou attracting wide attention all over the web showcases an all-in-one shovel that makes the Swiss Army Knife an ordinary fruit knife, yet with a price tag of just Rmb99.

For more delicate functions, according to the video, the shovel also makes the perfect companion to Chinese home cooking. Just see for yourself what it can do with vegetables and wheat dough. Still not satisfied? If cutting a wire is small home improvement, try the flying anchor function. Wait until this humble looking shovel becomes the next must-play item after Zippo with new usages discovered every day. Just one smart artillery Agent 007 needs. Good job, Q.

Tudou to Stream 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa Online

Leading online video licensing deal with national broadcaster CCTV
to serve young, sports savvy audience in China

(May 13, 2010 – Beijing, China) While the world’s football fans are tuning in and doing the final countdown toward the 19th 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in June, Internet video websites in China are experiencing steaming competition over the video broadcasting rights to serve an audience of over 400-million(1) Chinese Internet users in the far eastern land.  Tudou (www.tudou.com), the leading online video website in China officially announced 2010 FIFA World Cup online broadcasting deal with CCTV being the first video site inking the deal.  Tudou will be serving some of the most premium sports content to the largest global audience of young and savvy sports fans via the Internet.

2010 FIFA World Cup video content on Tudou will include all games, opening and closing ceremonies, as well as all official programming around FIFA produced by CCTV streaming on the Tudou.com platform.  Adding to the official contents, Tudou will also be sending a camera crew to South Africa to shoot the event experience on the ground and integrate with its trademark creative user-generated video productions.

One media analyst commented, given the tight control of China’s television market, CCTV network will be the only official carrier to broadcast the 2010 FIFA World Cup on TV.  The Internet, however, goes much beyond the limit and offers a wider range of content distribution opportunities.  Following Tudou, major portals such as Sohu, Sina, Tencent as well as video sites like Ku6 and Youku all have joined the wagon and announced licensing partnerships with CCTV.  Chinese audiences accessing content with their PCs obviously have a wider range of choices versus that sitting in front of television sets.

At the time of the previous 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, Tudou was the first video site launched in China and barely passed its one-year anniversary.  In the fight of four years, Tudou.com reaches 210-million unique users per month(2) and is now fully recognized as a mainstream online media platform for the young Internet audience.  The booming popularity of online video application penetrates some over 80% of the Internet population every month and has driven advertising dollars toward Internet videos too.  Currently, Tudou is in close dialogues with the top Fortune 500 top sports, soft drink and auto brands for Tudou 2010 FIFA World Cup online programming sponsorship.

The Secret Mission of the Terminator

A 3 1/2 minute CGI video is making its rounds around the Chinese web and Tudou depicts the secret mission of the Terminator taking place at Beijing’s Sanlitun. What begins as a helpless looking “Terminator” robot pan handling for some spare change for a recharge turns into an interesting outcome for the Apple store in Sanlitun.

For those who haven’t watched it, have a quick look. Warning. Not safe for Apple fanboys.

The video combines on-site shooting and CG (computer graphics) animation done by an amateur video-blogger nicknamed “Laxina” on Tudou all by his own efforts, as part of Magilm Pictures independent animator studio.

We reached out to the creator and asked him to share a bit more insight with us:

TUDOU: What was your inspiration behind creating “The Secret Mission Of The Terminator”

LAXINA: I was inspired by the movies “District 9” and “Cloverfield”. I decided to experiment with creating my own piece and fine tuning my CG skills in my spare time from my day job at a gaming company in Beijing.

TUDOU: Why did you choose the Terminator as your main character?

LAXINA: He’s been one of my favorite movie character since I was a teenager.

TUDOU: What kind of camera was used for the shooting of this video?

LAXINA: In order to create the sense of reality, I used a handheld DV recorder instead of professional cameras.

TUDOU: What are some challenges you faces when creating this clip?

LAXINA: Shooting at the mall was challenging – given the non stop shopping crowds and not-so-friendly security guards.  Many asked me whether the video was meant for commercial placements, as there was Uniqlo clothing store, Coke vending machine, Apple store, and Microsoft embedded in the imagery.  No.  Nothing was paid for.  It was a pure experiment simply to entertainment people.

TUDOU: Any interesting behind the scenes stuff you can share with those who’ll be reading this?

LAXINA: Here’s a cool trick. The Coke vending machine and mobile phone charging station in the video was totally added in by me.  They do not exist in the mall!
