After the hit success of the first Tudou “made-for-Internet” drama series in October 2010, Tudou, a leading video website in China, is launching its second Tudou “made-for-Internet” drama series “Utopia Office” tonight on www.tudou.com. Consistently targeted to the young, affluent, urban and educated Chinese audience, “Utopia Office” story can be described as Fringe. The original drama series tell stories of a team of young scientists commissioned to tackle not crime, but one and another mind-tangling science challenge in each episode. “Utopia Office” was fully planned, written, produced and marketed by an in-house team at Tudou, as part of Tudou’s “Orange Box” original production initiative in spring 2010.

“Utopia Office” is debuting tonight April 22, 2011 on www.tudou.com. The drama will present 12 episodes and run two episodes per week. Most of the actors and actresses are fresh and edgy new faces. In the sci-fi adventure drama, the young scientists’ team has to resolve problems such as to stop a vicious mobile phone virus, to create a powerful noise reduction device, to build a time machine, and even deal with aliens. The techno title song is created by music director Chien Yao, a famous song writer and producer in the Greater China region, and is sung by Angela Chang, a Taiwan-based pop singer who was also one of the 2010 Shanghai Expo celebrity ambassadors.

The first Tudou Original “That Love Comes” aired in October 2011 was selected as Advertising Age China’s 2010 top 10 branded content case studies partnering with AB-Inv Budweiser brand introducing its lime-flavored beer “BudLime” product to the Chinese consumers. For “Utopia Office,” Tudou worked closely with Nokia for its sleek E7 smart phone integration into the drama’s plot and placement, as well as with Toshiba for its laptop product line placement

This clip is of an incredibly focused and synchronized group of 700-school children in southwest China moon walking like the late King of Pop. The unique remake of “Dangerous” was filmed in Wushan County at Duping Primary School. As part of their physical education curriculum faculty teach the students a new song each year, last year’s choice was Korean pop song, ”Nobody”. Watching the children perform in the remote area surrounded by mountains presents a contrast to the usual glitz and glamor associated with Michael Jackson. Many of the children live with extended family because their parents have moved to cities for job opportunities. Their loneliness is exacerbated by the fact that they only see their parents a few times a year. Teachers at the school have noted that they seem to laugh louder and enjoy themselves more than usual while they are dancing. Once again, MJ’s dance moves have worked their magic.

In this clip, Chef Wu Xinxiao turns the typically meticulous art of ’la mian’ making into a lively performance. ‘La mian’ is the Mandarin term for hand-pulled noodles, literally meaning ‘stirred noodles’ or ‘to scoop out water’. Generally, ‘la mian’ is served in a broth with vegetables and seafood or meat. As a flavor unique to Northwest China, ‘la mian’ creation is taken very seriously with many technical requirements. The basic method is to first press the dough into a flat strip and then pull from the middle several times. Chef Wu proudly claims that he can pull 260,000 meters of noodles with only one kilogram of plain flour, so thin that 60 threads can be inserted thru eye of a needle! Watch Chef Wu play with his noodles, tricks that he said only took one month to perfect. He is probably the only ‘la mian’ maker who uses his noodles as a jump rope!

Panlong Yunhai, a traditional Chinese pharmaceutical company based in Yunnan, China, has entered into a strategic collaboration with Tudou in their first mega move to online media marketing. The cooperation will register at the 10 million yuan level, an unprecedented amount for a company associated with traditional medicine to invest in an Internet giant. Panlong Yunhai states that their motivation for the partnership comes from confidence in the brand recognition as Tudou as a renowned entertainment marketing platform.

Panlong Yunhai’s shift to online media marks a renewal in their cultural mission as well as a focus on a young and active customer base. With the view that modern life is stressful and a risk on health, the Vice President of Panlong Yunhai, Yu Bin, stated, ”Panlong Yunhai extends a message to revitalize the responsibility to human health through extensive and profound Chinese culture and medicine.” The theme of the company’s restructuring plan in conjunction with Tudou is, ”Enjoy the easy life, the net to win an unlimited future”. The main focus is on detoxification and healthy living with the aid of Panlong Yunhai’s most popular product, the Paiduyangyan (literally ”de-tox and beautify capsule”) which has reached over 7.0 billion in cumulative sales.

The partnership press conference resulted in the launch of the ”Detox Beauty Championship” event. The competition will consist of a call for independently made ”detox recipe” videos that align with Panlong Yunhai’s aim. Filmmakers will upload their videos to Tudou.com where users will vote for their favorite selection announced in late May. In a second phase of marketing collaboration, Panlong Yunhai has announced that they will sponsor Tudou’s new original drama ”That Love Comes 2” releasing fall 2011.

In this video, a man demonstrates exceptional musical ability with the Suona horn, a traditional instrument vital to Chinese folk music and religious ceremonies. He is able to play not just one but 16 of them at once!! Use of the Suona extends across 30 countries throughout Asia, Africa & Europe with its first introduction to China being via Persia. Its influence is deeply woven into the history of China, especially in the case of ritual music. The shrill and noisy sound produced is similar to that of an oboe. In this clip, the man featured demonstrates particular adeptness in handling the instrument. In addition, to playing 16 at once he also speaks with the Suona. What a unique and unusual skill to have!

This video shows the special Qi-Gong trick of merely using a needle to puncture a sheet of glass and pop a balloon on the opposite side. The skill is performed by a young girl who has dedicated years & years of training in QiGong and WuShu disciplines in order to achieve the control and awareness necessary to execute the skill. Qi-Gong is the practice of aligning of body and spirit to achieve a focused result, with “Qi” meaning breath or energy and “Gong” the intended force or power. Qi-Gong is often practiced in conjunction with WuShu (commonly known to Westerners as KungFu) or literally the art of fighting as “Wu” translates to warrior and ”Shu”means art. The young girl featured has been practicing WuShu & QiGong since childhood in Shanghai and later in Beijing at the WuShu Studies Institute. Such an extraordinary demonstration of the ability to harness energy through self-awareness at such a young age!

Generally, an outrageously large budget is the hottest topic of war movie production like “Band of Brothers,” or “Pearl Harbor.” However, this 11-minute gem made by a one-man Chinese youth talent, “The Last Warrior,” defies the odds with relatively meager costs less than US$500 (3000 Chinese yuan) to capture a large-scale domestic war in China. The shooting and post-production, completed with no sponsorship, were filmed in less than a month with only 4 days allotted for pre-shooting.

Posted as an original work on the Internet, the movie lacks a strong plot but is still graphically realistic and inspirational for a war scene – tanks, machine guns, bombs, you name it. Netizens praised the special effects despite the inconsistent and unnerving pattering of bullets and firearms. Without a doubt, the most impressive aspect of this piece is the ingenuity of the one person who is the combo director, producer, editor and special effect man. It’s amazing that he was able to produce such a level of quality with extraordinarily small budget! The creation of a massive war with so little lost is a moving and refreshing example of the creativity and resourcefulness of grassroots filmmakers in China.

Sichuan natives, young and old, encourage Japanese victims with the words “jia you” roughly translated to “stay strong.” In May of 2008, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Sichuan region and resulted in 70,000 lives lost and countless others devastated and displaced. Without a doubt, the Sichuan people relate to the Japanese suffering from the impact of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake across their country. A heartwarming example of compassion for Japan in their time of need through this Tudou video prayer.

Every spring Tudou organizes a “made for Internet” film festival initiative made to celebrate the creativity and energy of young indie filmmakers in China. Aspiring to be the “Sundance in China,” 2011 Tudou Video Festival (TDVF) is moving into its 4th year and becoming an iconic event gathering creative talents and industry participation. This year’s call for entry started in mid Dec 2010 and will close at end March 2011. So far video entries has exceed 8,000 and still growing, way exceeding 5,200 total from last year!

This week in Beijing, a group of 10 key supporters attended the 2011 TDVF kick off press event. Gary Wang, Tudou Founder and CEO was pleased to see what drove him to create Tudou starting to bear fruits in creating brilliant video works and structuring value chain for independent talents’ growth. The rising popular actress Luo-dan Wang, representing 2011 TDVF judge panel said she has been uploading behind-the-scene videos since her first major TV appearance back in 2007, and will always be a supporter of young fresh ideas from the creative community.

Below are some of the international media mentions of TDVF from last year. Stay tuned for 2011 Tudou Video Festival in April (official site: http://tdvf2011.tudou.com/)
