Dive into our imagination

Want to catch a movie, watch television, listen to music, play video games, read a book, search, shop or socialize online? Consumers today face multiple choices for entertainment and information across different media platforms. While celebrities grab headlines and hits capture audiences, media companies creating and distributing content face a spotlight of a different kind.

Amid a global advertising slump, they must develop innovative business models and strategies that adapt to rapid technological change. In the age of the Internet, where information can be free, digital works can be duplicated and distributed on a global scale. Search engines are increasingly powerful in areas such as online advertising and mobile technology.

How should media companies capitalize on the Internet’s potential for content delivery and maximizing digital revenues? How should content be valued and tied to rights? Another challenge for media companies is to build enduring entertainment brands that grow fans and customers.

How should they produce and manage lucrative properties that generate diverse revenues from DVDs, merchandise, theme-park rides, Broadway musicals and video games?

The panel was moderated by Senthil Chengalvarayan, President and Editorial Director of India’s TV 18 Business Media and Host of the Forbes India Show

Confirmed speakers:

  • Ryan Stokes, CEO, Australian Capital Equity and Executive Director, Seven Group Holdings
  • Dr. Seok Hyun Hong, Chairman and CEO, JoongAng Ilbo

Tudou Launches  Real Time Video Trans-coding for Mobile Platforms

Launching new mobile video technology combining HTML5 and HTTP live streaming enabling mobile users to access its 40-million video library

First video site to roll out real time video trans-coding access to its complete library of 40 million videos.

(September 7, 2010 – Shanghai, China) China’s leading video website Tudou (www.tudou.com) announces the open beta of its mobile video technology using HTML5 and HTTP live streaming enabling consumers’ full access of its over 40 millions videos on the web repository.  The break-through core technology “real time video trans-coding” is applied on major mobile platforms, now in open beta for Symbian, Andriod, Windows Mobile, and in closed beta for iPhone and iPad.  Globally Tudou is the first video website rolling out real time video trans-coding access to its complete video library.

Gary Wang, Tudou Founder and CEO, explained that Tudou’s mobile research and development efforts foresee HTML5 video rendering to become the next major protocol delivering video contents cross multiple platforms from PCs, and mobile phones to various portable devices providing much higher compatibility.

On the web, HTML language with Adobe Flash Player embed delivering FLV flash format video files has been the dominant industry standard for video websites across the world.  In January 2010, Youtube announced testing HTML5 on select videos on desktop and in July testing HTML5 on its mobile site has remained in limited launch since then.  In the mobile space, browsers and apps are not as standardized from a platform perspective.  By transitioning to HTML5, video content can be viewed by implementing < video > tag and delivering MPG4 format video files.  Videos being requested will load inside a new browser-based player instead of generating another player app, which usually takes more time on mobile devices.

In the meantime, Tudou is gradually launching Tudou Mobile Widget 2.0 across Symbian, Andriod, Windows Mobile, iPhone, iPad, Java and Bada platforms.  Within a month or two it will be available on 27 major mobile brands, and over 210 handset models shipped out of China.  Recently, the Tudou Mobile Widget was featured in the Nokia OVi app store and iPad Safari as the preferred Chinese online video application.  Tudou Mobile Widget 2.0 can be downloaded on the web via http://mobile.tudou.com/
